EC to discuss election laws with party secretaries and leaders today

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya will meet Secretaries of the political parties and leaders of the Independent groups who contest the forthcoming General Election at 10.00 a.m. today.

The Election Chief is expected to discuss many important matters including the election laws with the representatives, the state run radio said.

Additional Election Commissioner M. M. Mohammed said that two representatives from the European Union will arrive in Sri Lanka tomorrow to monitor the election. In addition, another group of 70 representatives from the European Union will also arrive in Sri Lanka for the monitoring activities later.

In addition ten representatives of the Commonwealth and a delegation from the South Asian Elections Association will also arrive in the country to monitor the elections on an invitation of the Election Commissioner. The representatives from the European Union and the Commonwealth come to Sri Lanka at their own expense.

Meanwhile, poll cards and ballot papers are being printed for the General Election, the Additional Commissioner said.

The registry for the postal voting is also being prepared. The teachers of the government schools will be able to cast the postal votes on August 3rd. Other government officers who have applied for the postal voting can cast their votes on August 5th and 6th.

The poll cards will be distributed to the houses by the Postal Department from the 30th July to 10th August. It has been declared 2nd and 9th of August as special distribution dates.
