Police Chief IGP N.K. Illangakoon yesterday asserted that the 2015 general election recorded a low rate of election violations.

Addressing a media briefing yesterday, he stressed that this election had sent a clear message to the world that Sri Lanka was able to hold a peaceful election, similar to developed countries.

“We can verify that the 2015 general election was one of the most peaceful and fair elections which we had in Sri Lanka. Incidents of election violence have reduced compared to previous elections, proving the effectiveness of the new election laws,” Illangakoon stated.  Illangakoon added that the Police had arrested all the culprits engaged in election violence.

“We have arrested 799 persons and taken into custody 251 vehicles due to election violations. We will be taking legal action against them,” he explained.

Illangakoon called on the people to enjoy the victory in a peaceful manner. He also thanked all ranks of officers of the Police Department for their contribution.
