Elections to two LG bodies postponed

The Elections Commissioner has postponed elections to the Puthukudiyiruppu and Maritimepattu Local Government (LG) bodies in the Mullaitivu District for the second time.

Elections to the two LG bodies have been postponed till 10 March 2012.

Nominations for Elections Department officials have said elections for Puthukudiyiruppu Pradeshiya Sabha and Maritime Pattu Pradeshiya Sabha were handed in on 6 January this year.

However, elections had to be postponed till 31 December 2011 by the Elections Commissioner since the area under the two LG bodies were being demined and displaced people were still being resettled.

According to the Elections Commissioner’s Department, the district is currently affected by the monsoon rains.

The decision to postpone the elections once again was made after discussing with the Mullaitivu District Elections Office.
