Chairman of Public Utility Commission of Sri Lanka Jayatissa de Costa says that the commission will submit proposals regarding the increase of electricity tariffs by 1 January. The Commission is waiting for the written response of the Treasury regarding its readiness to bear any loss incurred by the Ceylon Electricity Board, the official said.
He further pointed out that the electricity tariff can be maintained without amendments for six months. The Chairman further rejected reports that the cut off of 90 units per month for the concessionary rates will be reduced to 30 units. He said that 78% of the electricity consumers are in the low income group people who use less than 90 units per month.
