Emergency relief assistance from Japan to victims of floods, landslides

Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Kenichi Suganuma and Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Sri Lanka F. Tanaka officially handed over the emergency relief items from Japan to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ravi Karunanayake and Minister of Disaster Management Anura Priyadarshana Yapa at the Ministry of Disaster Management yesterday at 2.00 p.m. to be distributed among the victims of the recent floods and landslides that occurred after monsoonal rains lashed the country.

Suganuma expressed his deepest condolences to those who lost their lives in the disaster. In response to his message, Minister Yapa expressed his appreciation for the immediate support extended by the Japanese Government through JICA.

Following this supply of emergency relief goods, the Japanese Government will dispatch a team of experts to investigate the prevention of secondary disasters and the initiation of recovery and rehabilitation to have a series of discussions with relevant ministries in order to prevent further disasters. Moreover, the mission will seek future cooperation in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction. The expert team will be in the country from 2-10 June.
