A driver and a security officer who were working at the residence of a Nawaloka Hospital Director were yesterday further remanded till 16 May by a Colombo Court on charges of having stolen gold jewellery worth Rs. 3.5 million and Rs. 15,000 in cash.

When the case came up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage, the two suspects pleaded guilty for the charges but they were ordered to be further remanded after taking into consideration the seriousness of the offence. The Magistrate further directed the police that a fingerprint report pertaining to the suspects be obtained to ascertain their previous criminal records.

Hospital Director Harshith Dharmadasa in his complaint to the Colpetty Police alleged that gold jewellery worth Rs. 3.5 million and Rs. 15,000 in cash were stolen by two of his employees from his residence located at Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha in Colombo.

The complainant told police that the theft would have taken place when his family members were away on a trip during the Avurudu season. On their return his wife had found that the money and jewellery items kept inside a cupboard were missing.

During their investigations the Colpetty Police arrested the two employees and recovered the stolen cash and jewellery. Investigations had revealed that the suspects had opened the cupboard using newly-cut keys. The two suspects, Asanka Chamara of Galnewa and Anuruddha Indika of Rambukkana, were ordered to be further remanded till 16 May.
