Esri Global is the world leader in geographical information systems (GIS), which is exclusively distributed in Sri Lanka by GIS Solutions (GISS), a subsidiary of Just In Time Group, a pioneer in the ICT landscape of Sri Lanka with a 20 year history.

Geographic information system (GIS) was recognised and implemented recently by GISS, as the key source of asset information or data access for the Kandy City Wastewater Management Project (KCWMP). This end-to-end project implementation was based on the Esri, ArcGIS software platform facilitating a comprehensive approach to the access and collection of vital data. Additionally, an ongoing capacity building, assistance and training on the ArcGIS Software platform will be provided – an important support and service that GIS Solutions provides as a part of the project implementation cycle.

The implemented ArcGIS platform will now aid mapping of all ongoing project work and monitoring of progress towards a comprehensive database. Furthermore, by means of this platform it will allow the user to graphically visualise the entire operation through detailed dynamic and interactive GIS maps and sharing of vital information. The availability and usage of the ArcGIS platform is also operational 24x7 through all devices, giving the users no restrictions.

To maximise the benefit of utility-wide GIS technology, the data being shared must reliably meet the needs of the utility. Meaning, the asset data updated into ArcGIS platform must be; accurately positioned, descriptively noted (describe the asset appropriately) and current (up-to-date).

As a result, water, wastewater, and storm water utilities are now heavily focusing on quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) to ensure that their GIS data truly meets their needs.

For the community the benefits will provide improved sanitation in densely populated and low income areas in Kandy, through instalment of in-house sanitation facility, and refurbishing public facilities. Introduction of improved sanitation will also assist to improve the sanitary environment of the community and health of the residents.

Having the opportunity to work with the Japanese company, JFE Engineering Corporation who was the contractor on the KCWP, which was an essential collaborative partnership on the project was instrumental. JFE Engineering Corporation has unparalleled experience in Japan providing facilities with this technology, actively proposed this system to the Sri Lankan Government in order to help for reducing plant operation costs.

“We want thank the officials of KCWP for the opportunity given to the GISS Team, to be a part of this landmark project which is on par with global standards. The foresight and vision in enabling this project for the country is a noteworthy mention and a proud fact that we had the privilege of being a part of,” shared GIS Solutions CEO Ashani Jayasinghe-Dabare.
