EU Ambassador hands over newly constructed building to people of Mullaitivu

The Ambassador of the European Union David Daly, during his first official visit to the north handed over a European Union-funded multipurpose building to the community of Uppumaveli in Mullaitivu last week. Following a ribbon cutting ceremony, the building was declared open by Ambassador Daly and Mullaitivu Government Agent N. Vethanayagam. The newly built multipurpose building, constructed on the request of the community will benefit over 300 families and will further strengthen their economic and social standards. The construction of this facility which cost approx. Rs. 5.3 million is just one component of a larger EU funded project. The EU has partnered with ACTED to carry out the Rs. 269 million overall project in Mullaittivu and Trincomalee Districts with the sole aim of improving the living conditions through improved access to collective assets and infrastructure, better public service provision and increased opportunities for sustainable livelihoods. The total EU assistance to Sri Lanka during the period 2005-2015 amounts to approximately Rs. 95.5 billion including Rs. 26.4 billion provided by the European Investment Bank.
