EU Ambassador visits EU funded projects in North and East

European Union Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, David Daly will be visiting EU funded projects in the Batticaloa and Mullaitivu Districts next week. The aim of the visit is to witness the successful completion of the EU Support to Socio Economic Measures (EU – SEM) projects and to speak with the communities who have benefited from them. During the visit, Ambassador Daly will hold meetings with senior government representatives and local authorities. As one of the key sectors of the EU-SEM program is livelihoods development Ambassador Daly will visit the small and micro-enterprises which have benefited from this program, in the sectors of agriculture, fisheries, dairy and livestock, animal husbandry as well as infrastructures related interventions such as markets, seed paddy stores, food processing centres, milk collection and chilling centres etc. Prior to the visit Ambassador Daly said, “Through the EU-SEM program the livelihoods of some of the most vulnerable people in the North and East were provided the foundation towards becoming more economically self-sufficient. This program complements the national efforts in improving the living standards of local communities, thereby contributing to the overall development of the districts.” Through EU SEM the European Union has invested a sum of EUR 16 million or approx. LKR 2.8 billion. The EU has provided LKR 94 billion funding from 2005 – 2015 to Sri Lanka.
