Exposure visit for SL delegation to National Bio-digester Program in Cambodia

People in Need, (Czech Republic) and Janathakshan Ltd organised an exposure visit for an eleven member Sri Lankan delegation to the National Bio-digester Program of Cambodia from 26 to 31 October 2014.
Led by People In Need and Janathakshan the exposure visit comprised of ministerial and provincial officials and was organised under the EU SWITCH Asia Initiative ‘Up-scaling Biogas Technology for Sustainable Development and Mitigating Climate Change in Sri Lanka’.
The six day exposure visit aimed at introducing local policy makers to biogas technology and its benefits, influence policy change in support of extensive dissemination of biogas technology and facilitate a more coordinated involvement of various public institutions in biogas technology.
Hosted by the National Bio-digester Program (NBP) Cambodia and People In Need (PIN) Cambodia the visit included field visits to Mason training centre’s, users of biogas technology in the Takeo Province and meetings with officials from the Cambodian National Bio-digester Program.
Since 2011, PIN Cambodia has been working with the National Bio-digester Program (NBP), the organisation SNV, local banks and trained construction companies in order to build a market-based bio-digester sector in Cambodia.
Petr DRBOHLAV, PIN Regional Coordinator ASIA said, “To date, over 18,400 bio-digesters have been constructed in Cambodia, PIN is supporting the NBP and the development of biogas technology through a market based approach by training the bio-digester companies in marketing, contributing to the establishment and training of local technicians and retailers to ensure after sale services in 12 provinces. It enables biogas users to purchase services required for the effective operation of their bio-digesters in Cambodia. We hope through this visit the Sri Lankan delegation is inspired to facilitate access to biogas technology as a reliable source of energy contributing to savings on conventional energy and improved waste disposal.”
The EU SWITCH-Asia initiative is a joint partnership between People in Need, Cz and local partner Janathakshan funded by the European Union on a budget of EUR 665,000. The project is focused on up-scaling biogas technologies for sustainable development, responsible tourism, economic growth contributing to poverty reduction and climate change mitigation in Sri Lanka. The multi stakeholder project promotes the use of biogas as a renewable, clean energy source for public authorities, households and tourism Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
