According to reports Mustapha had resigned from the position of Aviation State Minister citing personal and professional reasons, but had said that he would continue to wholeheartedly support the President and the Prime Minister.

Musthapha resigned from his ministerial post just after a month after taking office, stating that he wanted to give more time to his legal profession.

Mustapha, who is a lawyer, entered politics in 2004. He was elected to Parliament from Kandy District the same year. He served as Deputy Minister of Technology and Research and thereafter as Deputy Minister of Investment Promotion until he crossed over to the Opposition in December 2014, backing the then ‘common candidate’ Maithripala Sirisena at the 2015 presidential election.
