FCID grills Keheliya over Rs. 20 m probe

The Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) yesterday questioned MP Keheliya Rambukwella over an allegation of obtaining Rs. 20 million from the President’s Fund as compensation for an accident he met with in Australia in 2012.

The FCID has been conducting investigation regarding the charges following a statement by Deputy Minister of Social Empowerment and Welfare Ranjan Ramanayake in Parliament. Ramanayake alleged Rambukwella received Rs. 20 million as compensation from the President’s Fund.

Ramanayake’s statement further claimed Rambukwella had obtained the compensation in 2013 in addition to the accident compensation from a hotel in Melbourne as well as his personal insurance.

Rambukwella met with the accident in 2012 during a private visit to Australia where he was injured after falling off a three-storey balcony in the hotel.

Meanwhile, the FCID has recorded another four-hour statement from Ramanayake on 31 May regarding his allegations against Rambukwella.
