FCID resumes corruption probes

The Financial Crimes Investigation Division resumed its corruption investigations on Thursday.

Former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivaard Cabraal appeared before the FCID yesterday for questioning about the controversial oil hedging agreement and the UDA’s acquisition of a private company.

“I answered all their questions, I don’t know if I will be summoned again,” Cabraal said as he left the FCID premises.

Meanwhile, former Housing Minister Wimal Weerawansa’s wife Sashi Ranasinghe was also questioned by the FCID over her assets yesterday. Ranasinghe was previously arrested for fraudulent representation in her national ID.

UPFA MP elect Weerawansa has also been summoned to the FCID today for questioning, lawyers for Ranasinghe revealed.

The FCID has started its investigations after a brief hiatus during the elections campaign after the Polls Chief advised them to pause proceedings in order to prevent opponents from getting political mileage from the appearance of candidates in the election appearing before the special police unit.

Both Weerawansa and UPFA Hambantota District MP elect Namal Rajapaksa are scheduled to appear before the FCID after their summons were deferred until after the poll. (DB)
