Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says that the Government is spending large amounts of money on the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) while firing economic missiles at the helpless masses. JVP Propaganda Secretary, parliamentarian Vijitha Herath said that it is the people who have to bear the burden of the Government’s expenses. He told a news conference that the Government is spending monies on CHOGM with an open estimate, which means there’s no limit on the amounts spent on the summit. He observed that the Treasury does not have monies to allocate to the ministries, but is engaged in wasting public funds in this manner. “Although the Government has claimed that its expenditure could be justified by the investments that have come into the country, it is not so. The country has received only 1.2% foreign investments since the end of the war in 2009 and most of these projects are granted massive tax holidays. The country does not gain any benefit,” Herath said, adding that the people are continuously burdened by the Government without any relief in sight.
