The Customs Department has begun an investigation into the incident of a SriLankan Airlines flight attendant allegedly attempting to smuggle a large quantity of gold jewellery into the country.

The employee was arrested by Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake who discovered gold jewellery weighing 6.5 kg worth around Rs. 35 million in his possession.

The arrested suspect, a 27-year-old male from Colombo, had arrived in the country on board a flight from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

The suspect was arrested in Peliyagoda while travelling to Colombo, according to the Customs media spokesman.

SriLankan Airlines said once the Customs investigation report was handed over the airline would take stern disciplinary action against the crew member alleged to have been involved in the incident.
