Former Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake yesterday appeared before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption over allegations regarding her asset declaration and filed a written submission.

The Commission summoned Dr. Bandaranayake last month for an investigation into her asset deceleration and when she appeared before the Commission last month she informed the Commission that she will make a written submission over the allegations today.

He lawyers had lodged preliminary objections to the presence of certain members of the Commission on the basis that they were biased since their family members had played a role in the impeachment process. The lawyers have added that they were neither made aware of the scope of the inquiry against her nor had received any documentation about the inquiry.

Dr. Bandaranayake, the first female Chief Justice of Sri Lanka was impeached in January this year by a parliamentary procedure. She has been summoned to appear before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption on 18th March 2013.

The Bribery Commission has also indicted Bandaranayake’s husband, Pradeep Kariyawasam who was the former chairman of the National Savings Bank for alleged corruption in a transaction causing loses to the bank.
