Former IGP Mahinda Balasuriya has been appointed as the new Secretary to the Ministry of Law and Order, replacing Major General (Retd) Nanda Mallawaarachchi for the post. Appointed as IGP in November 2009, Balasuriya had resigned from his post in June 2011 and was later posted overseas as an Ambassador. Balasuriya had retired as IGP saying the actions initiated against employees of the Free Trade Zone by the Police at Katunayake, on 30 May, was unsatisfactory and that he will never shy away from his responsibility. Balasuriya was seen as the first-ever Government senior official to forward his resignation in response to the act of misconduct of his subordinates. (Colombo Gazette)
