Former N.E Chief Minister says he is not keen on reentering politics

By N. Parameswaran Former North Eastern Province Chief Minister Varatharaja Perumal said he had no intention of returning to politics in the future. Perumal returned to Jaffna and conducted discussions with intellectuals regarding the current political landscape and his experiences as a Chief Minister. He stated in the discussions that he did not represent any political party and harboured no ideas of reentering politics in the future. Furthermore, he said mutual confidence or trust should be important among the Sinhalese and Tamils to solve the national question and India would not pressure the Sri Lankan Government to share power. He ruled the NEPC for only 15 months but active administration was maintained for only seven months. In 1990 Perumal declared Eelam in Trincomalee and fled to New Delhi with the IPKF.
