Common Opposition Candidate of the New Democratic Front Maithri-pala Sirisena says that 49 parties and organisations have pledged their support to his campaign at the upcoming presidential election. There are 49 party organisations including the Muslim Congress and the National Muslim Front who are with us, the Common Opposition Candidate said at a meeting on Tuesday in Nallur, Jaffna. He said the Opposition also extended an invitation to the main Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance to work with them to execute the Opposition’s national agenda. “However, I am happy to announce that they have decided to pledge their support to us without any agreement or understanding and without any written document,” the common candidate said at the meeting. He stressed that the Opposition has not signed any agreements with any political parties or organisations. Meanwhile, a Colombo University survey has found that common Opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena was ahead in the polls with 53% of the votes. According to the survey report released on 27 December, the assessment was made by taking into consideration the Sinhalese voter base while predicting that the Muslim and Tamil votes would be equally divided between the candidates. The survey reported that under those conditions Maithripala Sirisena would be ahead by 200,000 votes. However, with the main Muslim parties and the Tamil party pledging support to the common candidate, the survey predicts that Sirisena is likely to secure a 900,000 majority of votes.
