The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has taken steps to set up a special programme for the benefit of children who have lost their parents due to the war. The programme will initially be implemented in the Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi Districts, NCPA Chairperson Anoma Dissanayake said.

According to NCPA statistics, there are almost 1,100 children in those two districts alone who have lost either both parents or one parent and are currently under the care of relatives.

The NCPA has decided to construct a guardianship system for these children, she said. Therefore, any person can assist in raising these children.

Welcoming all who are interested to join, the Child Protection Authority states that they expect to receive at least Rs. 1,500 for children under the age of 10 and Rs. 2,000 for children over 10 years.

Those who wish to lend a helping hand are requested to contact the NCPA through its 24 hour hotline – 1929.
