Four hospitals to be reconstructed in the North

The Government has decided to reconstruct four hospitals in the northern Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts, which were damaged during the war, with a grant assistance given by United States Pacific Command on a proposal made by Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena.

Cabinet approval was granted for the development of the Divisional Hospital – Oddusudan in Mullaitivu District, Base Hospital Mulankavil and Divisional Hospitals in Poonagary and Pallai in the Kilinochchi districts.

Reconstruction of these hospitals will include construction of maternity ward, ETU, OPD, pediatric wards, consultants’ room and other facilities.

The Government will make available a sum of Rs. 23 million to meet the expenses of levies. Expeditious action is being taken by the Government to strengthen the Health Services in the Northern Province which were not functioning well during the last three decades due to the conflict situation.

Mullaitivu District has five Divisional Secretariat Divisions consisting of 127 Grama Niladhari Divisions. The latests statistics show that 84,877 persons have been resettled in the five DS divisions.

Kilinochchi District has four Divisional Secretariat Divisions consisting of 95 Grama Niladhari Divisions has 21,271 persons resettled in Poonagary and 8253 persons resettled in Pallai area.

Mulankavil Base Hospital with bed strength of 97 was the only hospital functioned during the heightened period of the war in 2008/09.

With the resettlement of the Internally Displaced Persons in these areas, it has become necessary to improve the Health Services in these areas very early. (news.lk)
