A fundamental rights petition was filed before the Supreme Court yesterday on behalf of Yoshitha Rajapaksa and three others, against their arrests and detention.

The FR has named the IGP and FCID officers as respondents. The FR claims that there was no basis for the arrest of the aforementioned and that their fundamental rights have been violated due to the arrest and detention hence seeking the courts intervention for their release.

Five persons including Yoshitha, son of the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, were arrested on Saturday under the money laundering act and remanded in custody on 30 January.

Yoshitha, a navy lieutenant, was taken into custody by authorities for questioning about dealings at a private television channel, Carlton Sports Network (CSN).
