The full Supreme Court (SC) opinion that President Mahinda Rajapaksa can contest for a third term in office does not need to be tabled in Parliament, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva informed Parliament yesterday. The main Opposition United National Party (UNP) has been pushing for the opinion of the SC to be tabled in Parliament so that it becomes a public document. However Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said that the opinion was only conveyed to the President and does not need to be made public. According to the determination of the court, which had been communicated to the President, there is no legal barrier preventing the President from holding an election after 4 years in office or seeking a third term. The Supreme Court decision on whether President Mahinda Rajapaksa can contest for a third term was dispatched to the President on 10 November by a full bench of Supreme Court judges. Earlier, the President sought a determination from the Supreme Court whether he faced any impediment to be elected to the office of President for a further term by appealing to the people for a mandate after his second term in office.
