G.L. to visit New Delhi in late January

External Affairs Minister Professor G.L. Peiris is scheduled to visit New Delhi in January on an official visit at a time relations between both countries are at a critical stage. According to Indian media reports the Minister will visit India on 28 January and is likely to met Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh apart from meeting the Indian Foreign Minister and others in the ruling Congress party and the opposition BJP. The visit comes as Tamil Nadu continues to push the Indian Government over the fishermen issue are attempts are underway to arrange talks between Sri Lankan and Indian fishermen. Minister Peiris will also be visiting India during election year during which Tamil Nadu political parties will decide if they will back Congress or the BJP to form a government. On the Sri Lankan Tamil issue the BJP has been seen as being more vocal while Congress has always been a bit softer while however backing resolutions at the UN Human Rights Council.The UN Human Rights Council will be meeting in Geneva in March and a new resolution is expected to be presented on Sri Lanka.
