The German Embassy is sponsoring a workshop on ‘Renewable Energy: New Directions Worldwide and the German Experience’ on 11 and 12 September at Waters Edge. The event is organised by the Sri Lanka Energy Managers Association (SLEMA). The agenda will focus on four key areas: Status of renewable energy development in Europe; Grid integration of renewable energy; Solar photovoltaic technology: on-grid and off-grid; Waste to energy and biomass for power and non-power applications. Two well-respected German experts, Joachim Gaube and Dr. Michael Knaus, will address participants, while the keynote address on ‘Renewable energy for sustainability’ will be by Prof. Mohan Munasinghe. Commenting on the initiative, Ambassador Dr. Juergen Morhard said: “Germany’s technical expertise in the field of renewable energy makes us one of the best examples for countries, regions and communities with ambitions of amping up their renewable energy generation. We are Europe’s largest clean energy market and have set an impressive number of milestones this year. I believe this workshop will intensify the discourse on suitable energy generation in Sri Lanka, and I congratulate SLEMA for providing a platform to advance the agenda of renewable energy.” Nearly 60% of Sri Lankans were served by the national grid in 2013, but growing demand requires significant development of both thermal and renewable energy-based power generation. The challenge to the latter is twofold: the intermittency of wind and solar power feeding into the national grid and the costs of all forms of renewable energy. The two-day seminar will focus on concepts and practices in the development of renewable energy technologies, and how Germany grapples with the challenges of grid absorption.
