The German Embassy launched its micro projects initiative for 2013, by handing over assistance worth almost Rs. 7.5 million to partner organisations. The funds will support activities that empower vulnerable communities.

In meetings with representatives of the implementing organisations, Ambassador Dr. Juergen Morhard said, “The micro projects initiative is a key component of Germany’s engagement with local communities. This makes us very mindful of supporting proposals that are sustainable and have a direct positive impact on people’s livelihoods.”

Organisations receiving German funding this year include the Upcountry Social Action Centre, the Sinhala Tamil Rural Women’s Network, the Rural Development Foundation and the Agency for Technical Co-operation and Development.

In keeping with the Embassy’s goal of providing support for development activities with long-term benefits, this year’s micro projects include water and sanitation, livelihood support and community-prioritised infrastructure. These projects will be implemented to benefit communities in the Nuwara Eliya and Mullaitivu Districts.

Every year, Germany provides Rs. 11 million worth of funding to vulnerable communities island wide as part of its efforts to enhance the capacities and living standards of the Sri Lankan people.
