01Following an appeal by the Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith yesterday, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) decided to postpone their planned trade union action.

Appealing to the doctors who were scheduled to launch an islandwide strike today, Cardinal Ranjith called on the GMOA to take into consideration the plight of the patients affected by dengue.

Addressing a media briefing at the Bishop’s House in Colombo yesterday on the waste management issue and the dengue threat, he requested the Government doctors to avoid launching a strike at this moment as there was a risk of the dengue epidemic spreading within the country.

The GMOA earlier this week announced that it would launch an indefinite strike protesting against the solutions proposed by the Government to solve issues that had arisen regarding the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine.
