  • Calls for UNHRC monitoring office to be established in SL to track progress

The Tamil National Alliance called for a monitoring office of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to be established in Sri Lanka, stressing that the Government must fulfill all the obligations in the consensual resolution adopted by the UNHRC on 1 October 2015.

In a statement released on Saturday the TNA said that the party arrived at this decision following a meeting of TNA parliamentarians and other leaders in Vavuniya on Saturday.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, TNA parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran said the party was of the view that the Government must fulfill these obligations under strict conditions. He also stressed that a monitoring office of the UNHRC should be established in the country to track progress.

In the event the Government fails to fulfill the obligations through a viable mechanism, the TNA stresses that justice should be meted out to the victims through an international mechanism.

However, the statement said that the EPRLF, a constituent member of the TNA, did not agree to the above condition.

ITAK leader Mavai Senathirajah and TELO head Selval Adaikalanathan also took part in Saturday’s meeting.
