Govt. asks for over Rs. 1 b more for CHOGM expenses

The Government has submitted in Parliament on Friday a supplementary estimate for over Rs. 1 billion to cover the expenses incurred to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Colombo last week. Chief Government Whip and Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena seeking parliamentary approval submitted the supplementary estimate of Rs. 1,089,819,500 to cover expenses incurred by several departments and ministries for the CHOGM 2013. According to the estimate, the Government seeks to pay Rs. 446 million to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development to cover the expenses incurred on purchasing vehicles for the security related activities at the CHOGM 2013. The amount sought is to meet the expenditure related to vehicle improvements, acquisition of machinery and equipment, to meet the recurrent expenditure including fuel, meals, uniforms, vehicle maintenance, postal and communication, staff training, and acquisition of furniture and office equipment. The Ministry of Mass Media and Information has sought a supplementary allocation of Rs. 33 million to cover expenses on public awareness campaigns of CHOGM 2013 while the Ministry of External Affairs has asked for Rs. 200 million. The army has asked for a supplementary allocation of Rs. 44 million, the Police Department Rs. 22 million, the Navy Rs. 8 million and the Sri Lanka Air Force Rs. 20 million for vehicle improvements in view of the CHOGM 2013.
