The Government has insisted that there was no attempt to suppress the investigations into the murder of the founding Editor of The Sunday Leader, Lasantha Wickrematunge. Minister Dinesh Gunawardena told Parliament yesterday that while there were differences of opinion between Lasantha and the Government on political issues, the Government respected him as a journalist. Gunawardena was responding to allegations raised by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake that the Government was attempting to suppress investigations into the 2009 murder. Karunanayake said that even the suspects who were arrested in connection with the murder had either been freed or died while in prison. “I assure this House that there is no attempt to suppress the investigations,” Gunawardena said. He said that even President Mahinda Rajapaksa had taken keen interest in the investigations and the investigations will continue. (Colombo Gazette)
