The Government Wednesday assured that there is no threat to the country’s security following the discovery of a suicide jacket and explosives at a residence in Chavakachcheri in Jaffna peninsula.

Defense Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi has stressed that the recovery was nothing extraordinary and asserted that there was no threat to national security.

He has said that various kinds of ammunition are recovered very often as these were all hidden by the LTTE during the war and so the question of national security being threatened does not arise.

However, the opposition has raised concerns that the discovery is a sign of Tamil Tiger rebels regrouping in the North.

Opposition parliamentarian and former president’s son, Namal Rajapaksa, on Wednesday tweeted that the recovery of the explosives from a house in the north raised questions that the Tamil Tiger rebels were trying to regroup.

The Joint Opposition at a press briefing this afternoon claimed that the government is attempting to conceal the truth behind the discovery of the stock of explosives and demanded the government to reveal the truth to the public.

The opposition has called on the government to take responsibility for the “breakdown in security” and take control of the escalating crime rate.
