Blocking the entry of Justice Verma’s delegation that was to study the impeachment only goes to prove that the Government is desperate to hide something, UNP Senior Vice President Lakshman Kiriella told the Daily FT.

“It makes it very clear, otherwise why couldn’t they facilitate this? They are proving that something shady went on by refusing a delegation of eminent jurists entry into the country,” Kiriella said.

He added that the Government was doing this just ahead of facing tough times at the UNHRC in Geneva again later this month, which is a clear display of the fact that the regime “doesn’t give a hoot about international opinion”.

Kiriella said the UNP had always maintained that Governments could come and go, but the reputation of the country should be safeguarded. “This regime is destroying that,” he said.
