Govt. pays compensation to the war-affected people in north

Implementing the recommendations made by the Lesson Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), the Government has initiated a program to pay compensation to the residents of Northern Province affected by violence during the war.
Under the first phase of the program, President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Thursday symbolically handed over compensation to the families of people who lost loved ones and property and sustained injuries.
The first phase of the program coordinated by the Rehabilitation Authority will hand over compensation to 1,200 people and the Government has allocated Rs. 85 million for the purpose utilising the funds allocated for 2013 as recommended by the LLRC.
Senior Ministers A.H.M. Fowzie and Tissa Vitharana, Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera, Deputy Minister Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, senior Government officials and diplomats participated in the occasion.
