Govt. to create a joint mechanism to reduce child molestation and violence against women

The Law and Order Ministry jointly with the Sri Lanka Police is planning to launch a program to create a joint mechanism to curb child abuse and violence against women.

A program for creating the joint mechanism for reducing child molestation and violence against women was held on Tuesday, 27 September at the auditorium of Urban Development Authority, Sethsiripaya under the leadership of Secretary to the Ministry of Law & Order and Southern Development,  Jagath P. Wijeweera

This program is scheduled to be launched jointly with the participation of officers of the Women and Children Bureau of Sri Lankan Police and the officers of the Ministry of Women & Child Affairs attached to Child & Women Development Units established at the District and Divisional Secretariats.

Many public officers including the Secretary to the Ministry of Women and child affairs, Chandrani Senaratna and the Inspector General of Police, Pujith Jayasundara participated in this program, Sri Lanka Police said.

The Police Department is also setting up a database on offences committed against children and women as a measure to minimise such incidents. The project has been offered by The Asia Foundation and funded by the British High Commission.

The ceremony for setting up the database for Children and Women Bureau was held under the leadership of Inspector General of Police, Pujith Jayasundara Wednesday, 28 September 2016 at the Auditorium of Computer Training Centre at Vilasitha Nivasa.

This database is scheduled to be launched with effect from 2017, through 42 divisional Children & Women’s Bureaus and Headquarters of the Children & Women’s Bureau.
