Govt. to evacuate Lankans in Yemen

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday that due to the volatile situation in Yemen, the Sri Lankan Government had made arrangements to evacuate all Sri Lankans staying there. In a statement yesterday, the Ministry also requested members of the public to provide it with details of their relatives in Yemen. There are reportedly 75-100 Sri Lankans, including students, in Yemen. They are principally residing in the constitutional capital Sana’a and other major cities such as Hodeida, Aden and Mukalla. The Ministry said that - together with the Sri Lankan Embassy in Muscat which is concurrently accredited to Yemen - it was exploring every possible avenue of ensuring the safe return of all Sri Lankans trapped there,. “The Government has sought the assistance of the UN Office in Sana’a and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Colombo in the evacuation efforts. Also the Indian Government has promptly acceded to the request of Sri Lanka to bring stranded Sri Lankans along with Indian nationals in Yemen, who are to be evacuated by air and sea on special flights and ships respectively,” the ministry said. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the next of kin of Sri Lankans in Yemen to provide the contact details of their relatives to the Ministry’s Consular Division by e-mailing [email protected]/[email protected] or telephoning 0115839414/0112323015. They also requested their relatives in Yemen to provide their information to the Sri Lanka Embassy in Muscat, by getting in touch with the Charge d’ Affaires/Oman on 0096 895863739/ 0096 899898836 or emailing [email protected].
