Govt. to re-appoint National Police Commission

THE government is to re-appoint the National Police Commission after a lapse of about two and a half years. The Police Commission became defunct due to the failure to appoint new commission members after the terms of the Commission and its Chairman ended in April 2009.

Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga has said that the National Police Commission would be re-appointed shortly.

After the National Police Commission became defunct, the Public Services Commission was assigned the task of handling promotions in the police force and the transfers were ordered on the Defence Secretary’s recommendations. However, Weeratunga has observed that once appointed, the National Police Commission would once again handle the issues related to the police force.

The National Police Commission was appointed by the Constitutional Council under the 17th Amendment to the Constitution and the Commission would now be appointed under the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. (Colombo Page)
