Prior to holding a national election to ensure the confidence of the citizens on the process of a free and fair election, the Government has taken steps to establish a special committee to expeditiously investigate election complaints. The committee will comprise experts from the legal, administrative, election, fiscal and investigation sectors. Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Rajitha Senaratna said the committee would investigate reported incidents of misuse of state media, the illegal use of public property for election activities, the use of government servants in political activities, misuse of government funds and violations of the rules and regulations of Act No. 15 of 1981 relating to the election of a President. It will also look to establish an efficient and transparent mechanism to commence expeditious investigations and take necessary legal and disciplinary action. The committee will present a report on its findings within a period of 60 days. The Cabinet of Ministers has given approval to the proposal submitted by State Minister of Administration, Provincial Councils, Local Government and Democratic Governance, Karu Jayasuriya in this regard.
