Five habeas corpus cases filed on the disappearances of people are to be taken up on 15 July at the Vavuniya High Court. The petitioners appeal to the court to find the whereabouts of their relatives surrendered to the military in May 2009 following the end of the war. Senior Counsel K.S. Ratnawel appears for the plaintiffs. Sources say that more cases are likely to be filed soon. The petitioners say that around 800 surrendered to the military on 18 May, 2009 at Selvapuram in Mullaitivu and they were taken away in 15 buses. Their whereabouts were unknown since then. Reports say that Elilan, former senior leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and his family were also among the surrendered. Father Francis Joseph, the former Rector of the St. Patricks College, Mullaitivu was also among them and he is also missing since then, the petitioners say.
