Hakeem in official visit to Malaysia

Minister of Justice Rauff Hakeem, who is currently on an official visit to Malaysia met the Secretary General of United Malay National Organisation (UMNO) and the Minister of Federal Territories Tengku Adnan Mansor at the UMNO headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. Ministers discussed in detail the current political developments in respective countries. Minister Mansor explaining in detail the current political climate in Malaysia analysed the results of the parliament elections held last year and said the electorate has given clear signals to the Government that reforms are necessary in many spheres of government. He explained several harsh laws have been repealed and more opportunities have been provided to the youth of the country which is emerging as a political force. He further said that the Government does not use religion as leverage and always sought to strike a balance between radicalisation and religious views. Minister Hakeem briefed the Minister on post-conflict development initiatives launched by the Sri Lankan Government and invited more Malaysian investment in the Northern and Eastern Provinces which were badly affected during the three decades of conflict. He also invited the UMNO and SLMC to collaborate and initiate youth and womens exchange program and to explore the possibility of reaching understanding of mutually beneficial programs. Minister Mansor said that already UMNO is cooperating with various organisations and political parties from a number of countries. Currently, more than 25 individuals from other countries are being trained in cyber technology. Both Ministers agreed to discuss further on people to people bilateral exchanges. High Commissioner Ibrahim Ansar and Minister Hakeem’s legal consultant M.H.M. Salman also participated in the discussion.
