Hakeem to appoint committee to address evictions

Minister of Urban Development and Water Supply Rauff Hakeem held a meeting with Urban Development Authority officials at his ministry last week to discuss the removal of 470 houses and 98 shops in Colombo Minister Rauff Hakeem said that a special committee was to be appointed to look into the Slave Island housing issue. A committee, compromising three representatives from the UDA, the Colombo Divisional Secretary, the Attorney General’s Department, a representative from the Colombo Municipal Council and Housing Ministry, will look into the matter within 60 days. The Minister said that the committee would also look into public complaints, issues concerning ownership of deeds, valuation of Government property, payment of rentals and compensation for affected families.
