Hit-and-run motorist surrenders

A person who fled the country after fatally hitting a pregnant pedestrian on a crossing last month has returned to the country on Thursday and surrendered to the Police yesterday. The hit-and-run suspect, Lilan Piyarathna, a security director of a leading private hospital in Colombo, had driven away after hitting the five-month pregnant victim at Gunasinghepura in Pettah when was on a pedestrian crosswalk and killing her on the spot. The 27-year-old woman, Mohammad Fatima Mujia, had arrived in Pettah from Kalutara with her husband at 4 a.m., to go to Kandy. The driver had reportedly left his vehicle at his residence in Kiribathgoda and fled the country within 24 hours to the US via Singapore. Police used CCTV footage and partial number plate information to identify the vehicle and the suspect. Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said earlier the Police requested Interpol to issue a red notice to nab the suspect and that the request would now be cancelled.
