The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to be vigilant and take immediate action regarding the recent attacks and assaults carried out targeting police personnel while discharging their duties, Human Rights Commissioner Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa said yesterday.

The HRCSL observes that there has been a recent spate of attacks carried out targeting police personnel who are assured the task of maintaining law and order.

Dr. Mahanamahewa stated that these circumstances could be considered to be instances of violating the human rights of police personnel while discharging their duties.

Meanwhile, the HRCSL has advised the IGP to carry out prompt investigations into such instances and urged him to take legal action against the culprits and ensure that justice is done without delay.
