HRCSL to meet state institutions over Weliweiya fiasco

By Lakmal Sooriyagoda While conducting a separate inquiry into the Weliweriya incident, the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has decided to meet 26 State institutions today. Human Rights Commissioner Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa said the drinking water problem and the hardships faced by the villagers of Rathupaswala and surrounding areas would be discussed during this special meeting. The Commissioner further said that five senior investigative officers of the HRCSL had visited the Weliweriya area and a preliminary report in this regard would be issued soon. “During this field visit, our investigative officers have visited and gathered information from the Police station, the hospitals where the injured persons received treatments, the Church and the residences of the victims, so we will issue a preliminary report with the recommendations to be issued on relevant authorities,” he noted.
