I will not let LTTE rise again: Maithri

New Democratic Front presidential candidate, Maithripala Sirisena on Monday rejected the Government’s allegation that if he became president, the Tamil Tiger terrorist group LTTE would rise with the support of the Tamil Diaspora. Addressing a public rally, the opposition candidate said that if he became President on 8 January he would not allow the LTTE to be revived again in the country. Opposition’s common presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena addresses the first rally in Mannar yesterday He said winning the war against the LTTE was not just one man’s victory. It was a victory achieved through the sacrifice of thousands of people and everyone who made a sacrifice deserved to be honoured for the war victory. At a public rally in Anuradhapura yesterday, the common candidate said the Rajapaksa Government neglected the farming community and worked to please the big corporations. Casinos, car races and alcohol had become the main income generators. He said that the current Government has no understanding whatsoever of how to to uplift the local agricultural sector. Sirisena said that when he was the Agriculture Minister he brought several proposals to uplift the agricultural sector and the livelihood of the farmers but the Rajapaksa Government did not implement any of them. The common candidate said that after 8 January his Government, through a special gazette notification, would announce an action plan to uplift the agriculture sector and the plight of the farming community. His Government would especially focus on curtailing the import of toxic fertilizers and other agrochemicals imported by big companies, he said.
