IDP Families in the Poonthoddam, Vavuniya Welfare Camp receive lasting solutions

Under the direction of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, durable solutions have been provided to the IDP families in the Poonthoddam Welfare Camp.

In the Vavuniya Poonthoddam Welfare Camp, there are 97 IDP families who have come from Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Jaffna and Vavuniya temporarily residing in the camp. These IDP families are landless and Government has taken action through the Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs to resettle the said 97 families.

Already 60 acres of land in Sinnadampan in Vavuniya North Divisional Secretariat Division has been identified and 66 housing units are under construction through a Non-Governmental Organisation called Gnanam Foundation. These houses are scheduled to be completed in August 2016 to enable IDPs to be resettled, said V. Sivagnanasothy, Secretary, Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs.

Following the President’s recent high level meeting, a further 40 acres of land in Puliyankulam, Vavuniya North was transferred to Divisional Secretary by the Department of Forest for resettlement. Thirty-four housing units are being initiated by Gnanam Foundation on a voluntary basis to support the resettlement initiatives.
