Import taxes on big onions upped again

The Ministry of Co-operatives and Internal Trade yesterday announced that the special commodity levy on imported big onions had been increased with immediate effect. Accordingly, the import tax for big onions will be increased by Rs. 15 from Rs. 35 to Rs. 50 per kilo. Sri Lanka increased the taxes on big onion imports in August this year for a second time.The Ministry said the import levy was increased to safeguard local farmers. The tax increase is expected to control imports and increase the prices of local produce which is being harvested. The onion farmers complain that the prices for big onions in the market are low and they have not gained any profits from their crops.
