India commends initial steps taken by Sri Lanka for political reconciliation and inclusiveness

India yesterday commended the early steps taken by the new Government of Sri Lanka for “political reconciliation, inclusiveness and participation.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the people of Sri Lanka for the successful conclusion of elections, which he said “had been watched with great regional and international interest,” when the External Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera called on Prime Minister Modi yesterday in New Delhi.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated new President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on the impressive victory, “which was a vote for unity and change in Sri Lanka.”
He expressed hope that President Sirisena’s victory would advance peace, reconciliation and development in Sri Lanka, and peace and progress in the region.
Describing Sri Lanka as a truly close neighbour and friend, the Prime Minister offered India’s continued support and partnership to the Sri Lankan Government and people in realising their aspirations.
Stating that even a few steps can clearly indicate one’s direction, Prime Minister Modi expressed his admiration for the Lankan leadership’s vision of a “truly Sri Lankan Government” inclusive of all voices, and the initial steps taken by the new Government in Sri Lanka for political reconciliation, inclusiveness and participation.
The Prime Minister thanked President Sirisena for accepting the invitation to visit India and looked forward to receiving him at an early date. He also accepted the invitation to visit Sri Lanka at a mutually convenient date.
