India has welcomed Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s announcement on elections in the Northern Province. India also felt the Parliamentary Select Committee set up to take a look at issues relating to Constitutional reform must have all shades of opinion on board.
This was conveyed to Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa when he met External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, besides the National Security Advisor and the Foreign Secretary, Delhi on 5 July.
Minister for Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa expressed his appreciation for the vast number of projects that are being undertaken by India in Lanka especially in the Northern and Eastern provinces.
Many bilateral tie-ups were discussed with Minister Rajapaksa, where he had conveyed a day earlier that the main purpose of his visit was to inform India about Sri Lanka government’s plans to revisit the 13th Amendment.
National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon is scheduled to visit Colombo next week to hold talks on a tri-lateral maritime security treaty among India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Indian officials said last friday. Menon’s visit to Lanka comes on the heels of Minister Basil Rajapaksa’s visit to India.
