India hands over relief goods worth Rs. 5 m to landslide victims

India is providing emergency humanitarian assistance worth Rs. 5 million, following the devastating landslide which hit Haldummulla in the Uva Province on 29 October. Assistant High Commissioner of India in Kandy, A. Natarajan, handed over relief goods on behalf of the High Commissioner of India to Uva Province Governor C. Nanda Mathew on 10 November at the Governor’s Office in Badulla. Uva Province Chief Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa, Uva Province Estate Infrastructure Development Minister Senthil Thondaman, Uva Province Chief Secretary P. B. Amarasekara and Badulla Government Agent Rohana Dissanayake were also present at the occasion. The relief goods were identified in coordination with the Sri Lankan Government and were procured locally. The items included large and small generators, water pumps, a tractor, chainsaws, concrete power saws, water hoses and aluminium cookware. In addition to addressing the immediate needs of the affected people, the Indian Government has also committed, as part of its housing project in the estates, to construct houses in some landslide prone estates which have been evacuated.
