The 15th Neelan Tiruchelvam Memorial Lecture titled ‘Stone and Flower: Truth as a Foundation for Community Learning and Reconciliation’, will be delivered by Galuh Wandita Soedjatmoko from Indonesia on Sunday 3 August 2014 at 6 p.m. at the BMICH, Committee Room A. Soedjatmoko has over the last two decades worked with several local organisations in East Timor and Indonesia on rights, reconciliation and peace-building. Before moving to East Timor in 1999, she worked for 10 years with Oxfam, focusing on support for local NGOs working in conflict areas in Eastern Indonesia with a focus on gender and development. She is a founding member of the women’s organisation, Fokupers, in Timor-Leste, established in 1997. In 1999, her work focused on providing support for those affected by violence, including internally displaced persons (IDPs) and women victims of violence in East Timor. Soedjatmoko obtained a BA in Anthropology from Swarthmore College in 1988, and completed a Masters in International Human Rights Law at the University of Oxford in 2007. She is presently Director of Asia Justice and Rights, Indonesia. In her lecture Soedjatmoko will focus on processes that enable the transformation of the lives of those affected by violence and their communities. This is the 15th lecture held in memory of Dr. Neelan Tiruchelvam who was assassinated on 29 July 1999. At this year’s lecture we will pay tribute to the founder of the Neelan Tiruchelvam Trust, Sithie Tiruchelvam, who passed away on 22 March this year. Besides her various achievements in the field of corporate law, she established the Trust as a public foundation supporting community efforts to promote peace building, justice and reconciliation. The public is warmly welcome to attend.
